‘I think that there are people in your life who… they inspire art, y’know, and you blow them up into these mythical characters and you give them all of those magical qualities and maybe their just stepping stones for something bigger and better.’
Kali, Love Song (Season 5, Episode 6), Californication

'Pride,' observed Mary, who piqued herself upon the solidity of her reflections, 'is a very common failing I believe. By all that I have ever read, I am convinced that it is very common indeed, that human nature is particularly prone to it, and that there are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self-complacency on the score of some quality or other, real or imaginary. Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonimously. A person may be proud witout being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.'- Mary Bennet, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, pp.17, 18

'Somewhere in the middle of getting married, having a baby, abandoning my novel, starting and abandoning half a dozen others, having another baby, and trying to stay on top of the bills, something wholly unexpected and depressingly typical happened: I stopped caring about my writing, and started caring about everything else: The kids. The marriage. The mortgage.'- Seth Grahame-Smith, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, pp. 5 & 6

'I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. 'Alone, with too much generosity- Colin Newman, Alone (A-Z)
A theatre mask of hostility attracts
Assaults occur infrequently
And those who come, to conquer?
Need strength
But damage accumulates
Still moving him to tears
Retained a sense of humour.'

'Here, last week they found this couple out in California. They rent out rooms to old people, kill 'em, bury 'em in the yard, cash their social security checks. Oh, they'd toture 'em first. I don't know why. Maybe their television set was broke. And this went on until, here, I quote "Neighbors were alerted when a man ran from the presmises wearing only a dog collar." You can't make up such a thing as that. I dare you to even try. But that's what it took, you'll notice, to get somebody's attention. Diggin' graves in the backyard didn't bring any.'- Ed Tom Bell, No Country For Old Men

'I'm having trouble trying to sleep- Green Day, Brain Stew (Insomniac)
I'm counting sheep but running out
As time ticks by
And still I try
No rest for crosstops in my mind
On my own, here we go
My eyes feel like they're gonna bleed
Dried up and bulging out my skull
My mouth is dry
My face is dumb
Fucked up and spun out in my room
On my own, here we go
My mind is set on overdrive
The clock is laughing in my face
A crooked spine
My senses dulled
Passed the point of delirium
On my own, here we go'

'I checked here, for the theme was carrying me along with it at a great pace, and I already saw before me a region on which I was little disposed to enter. I agreed with myself that this was idle musing, and resolved to go to bed, and court forgetfullness. But, all that night, waking or in my sleep, the same thoughts recurred, and the same images retained possession of my brain.'- The Old Curiousity Shop, by Charles Dickens, p.13
As an aspiring writer, I often find myself inspired by the words of others. I've been looking for a place to jot down these 'quotes' for sometime, finding that a word document or a note on my iphone is not really sufficient storage space for the wise, humorous, sarcastic, and nihilistic words that tickle my fancy. So due to the fanfare that followed the start of my first blog (kidding, but more seriously, check it out here) I have decided that I shall store them here. As I like to consider myself a pop-culture child, the quotes I post here will be from everywhere and everything: television, film, books, poetry, songs, and possibly even some of my own stuff if I work up the courage (and if I get a hell of a lot better at writing). I will be posting one quote a day (I say that now) as an attempt to not only collect a bunch of quotes that intrigue me, but as an attempt to do something that is creatively constructive to keep my wondering mind occupied on something. Writer's block can be a bitch, so at least this way I'm discovering what I like about other people's writing. How these quotes might help me learn more about writing, and positively influence the progression of my own.
If you like this blog, please follow, and if you have a blog similar to this one do the same. Inspiration can come from anywhere and I have no doubt that I will soon enough run out of interesting quotes to share with you all and then I will start scouring Blogger in an attempt to find others people are sharing to link them (I swear I'm not just a hoarder of other people's ideas. Or am I? I wonder would Barthes would say about that?). And with the beginning of a philosophical soliloquy, I shall bid you good day. Enjoy!
